Concert Video Shot List Template

Live music is unrepeatable and dark. The two things that separate a good gig film from a bad one are having a soundcheck pass and having crowd footage — most people get neither.

Soundcheck is where you get everything you cannot get during the show.

The shot list

Soundcheck and before

Your only controlled filming of the day. Use all of it.

  • 01Empty venue, wide
  • 02Stage and lighting rig, empty
  • 03Load-in and setup
  • 04Soundcheck performance — every angle you cannot get later
  • 05Instrument and gear detail
  • 06Backstage — tuning, waiting, nerves
  • 07Setlist, close
  • 08Crowd queuing outside

Performance

  • 09Wide of the full stage, locked off, running throughout
  • 10Vocalist, medium and close
  • 11Each musician individually
  • 12Hands on instruments, close
  • 13Low angle from the pit
  • 14Side of stage looking across
  • 15From behind the drummer, out to the crowd
  • 16Silhouette against the lighting rig
  • 17Lighting and pyro moments

Crowd

Most gig films are ruined by having no crowd footage. Film as much as the performance.

  • 18Wide of the full audience from the stage
  • 19Crowd from the back of the room, stage lit behind
  • 20Faces in the front rows
  • 21Hands in the air
  • 22Singing along, close
  • 23Crowd surge or movement
  • 24Phones filming, from behind

Atmosphere and after

  • 25Bar and foyer
  • 26Merch stand
  • 27Light beams through haze
  • 28Encore and final bow
  • 29Empty venue after, house lights up
  • 30Load-out

Tips for this kind of shoot

  • Get a soundcheck pass. It is the only time you can film the stage without an audience in the way.
  • Film the crowd as much as the band. A concert film with no audience feels like a rehearsal.
  • Shoot wide open and accept the noise. Underexposed live footage is worse than grainy live footage.

Storeyz keeps your shots in story order for planning and regroups them by location for the day — then you tick them off on your phone as you get them.
